I wanted to watch this drama but because of the feedback of those who have watched it I had second thought. Until Shaz, one of my commenters told me that it isn’t that bad. So I heed her advise. And boy was I glad because i got a good dose of Jerry Yan in this drama. lol.

Honestly, I only like Jerry Yan now. I never like him during his Meteor Garden days. Maybe its because of his role and hairdo ( I really don’t like guys with long hair, LJK is an exception. lol!). So when I saw him on hot shot, I am now singing a different song. I wanted to watch a Jerry Yan drama while waiting for subbed episodes of the said drama.

Here is the synopsis from dramawiki :

When President’s only daughter, Liu Xin Ping, checked into the hospital for her chemotherapy treatment, the head of internal Medicine, Dr. Xu Da-Ming, and the head of surgery, Dr. Tang Guo-Tai, became the core members of the President’s medical team. Both men planned to use this opportunity to prove themselves to be the best person for the hospital director’s position.

Xu advised Liu to have a Central IV implantation to alleviate the discomfort of her treatment. He appointed Dr. Su Yi-Hua, an expert in this type of operation, to perform the surgery. When Tang found out, he was furious that Xu appointed one of his surgeons without his explicit approval. To spite Xu and take credit for the treatment, he replaced Su with Dr. Qiu Qing-Cheng and publicly announced that he himself had performed the surgery. However, this move put himself and the hospital in a very difficult position when Liu developed serious complications after the surgery.

Through out the ordeal, Su tried to maintain his integrity as a doctor by standing up to Tang. His actions created great displeasure in his boss and caused him to be alienated by the entire surgical department.

While Su was experiencing alienation, the woman he loved was also under duress in the hospital. Anesthesiologist Guan Xin was caught in a medical malpractice claim involving hospital director Huang Kai-Yuan. Through Tang, Huang put pressure on Guan to take the blame for the malpractice. Guan refused. In the ensuing media circus, Guan endured pressures from both the hospital and the victim’s family. She learned that it’s difficult to maintain principle in the face of reality.

Tang’s overbearing attitude eventually led to his own downfall and Xu’s rise to power. The shift in power stirred up series of personnel changes, of which, directly impacted the future of Qiu, Su and other members of the surgical department.

The Hospital has 39 episodes. Yeah, its that long. But I don’t find it draggy might be because I kept on forwarding it. lol. And as the title implies its centered on the hospital and the lives that revolve in it. Jerry Yan plays a skilled young doctor who was requested to operate on the hospital’s president daughter who is suffering leukemia. But because of power grabbed, a manipulation took place that made Dr. Su (Jerry Yan) unable to do the operation.

This drama is about politics that is happening inside the hospital and Dr. Su being caught in between. It also shows some medical malpractices that doctors tried to cover up. And their desire to be at the top made them forgot their main goal of taking care of the patients.

In totality I like The Hospital but I understand those who never enjoyed it. Maybe because Jerry Yan was most of the time being used. Her lady love was not that in love with him. And there are too many deaths involve. Well, its the hospital what would you expect. What I just don’t get is the head nurse at the start of the drama was closed to Jerry and then she dissappeared all of a sudden. And then after a while she appeared again suddenly the same manner she dissappeared. Also, I never thought Jerry would end up with that lady. She wasn’t even there at the start. lol.

This drama showed a lot of thing. Selfishness and Selflessness. Love and betrayal. Humility and Arrogance. And letting go. The ending is just right for me. Dr. Su realizing why he became a doctor. And finding his way back to the one who truly love him. Should I mention that one doctor gone insane ? Who ? Well, find out by watching the drama.

Dang, do you know that after being operated on the lungs, I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism ? Watching this drama made me realized how lucky I am.

LOL! i still think that even after Hot Shot, The Hospital is STILL Jerry’s best work to date. the story, the production, the powerful cast, and the drama’s desire to rise above the rest of the TW dramas is really awesome. it’s really nice of jerry despite being an idol to accept this drama challenge not a lot of TW actors (idols) are willing to take or don’t have the chance to.

when i was watching this, i really thought, man, this drama is the bomb, and no wonder it has been getting rave reviews and praises from critics.

what i just hate is bec of the ending, i needed days to recover. i cried so fast bec of this series!!!

Lol, interesting take on the Hospital! I only finished with the drama last night myself, so what did you make of the ending? To be honest, though I thoroughly enjoyed the drama, it’s one of those dramas you’d love to hate!

Like you said, it provides a good dose of Jerry Yan :P
But I must say, towards the end, Su became one of my least favourite characters. More than Su, I really enjoyed the (dirty)politics that surrounded the Hospital-now thats pure drama. Out of all the characters, I really loved Dr Khoos role (the moron who had the love affair), I felt his character development was really good throughout the drama.

On the other hand, (bar the fact that it took me a while to get use to a different Jerry Yan than the one from meteor garden days-which btw like you made me cringe) Su’s role wasn’t all that bad, but his character really let me down in the last 2 eps. That was the only thing that killed it for me. Like you said, the characters/love plots surrounding Su were soo random-they come and went as they pleased with Su at their disposal (maan that irritated me). Within a span of a year, his change in character/persona was far too abrupt. Though it would have made a bitter sweet ending, I’d rather the drama would have ended without Su getting the girl. Great review btw. Peace out X

p.s. lol that must have been some fast forwarding you did to get through all 39 eps of the Hospital!

“it’s really nice of jerry despite being an idol to accept this drama challenge not a lot of TW actors (idols) are willing to take or don’t have the chance to.”

I couldn’t agree more, it was a refreshing change to see an “idol” star in a NON-idol drama! I can’t say its Jerry yan’s best piece of work (because I’ve only seen him in Meteor Garden, and Hot Shot hasn’t finished airing yet) but I can most certainly say that his acting has improved a great deal since MG days-and its clearly apparent in the Hospital. Having said that, he’s a man with potential, and since watching the Hospital, I can’t help but compare his acting in Hot Shot. Though they’re both two very different dramas, playing two very different roles, I notice that his acting just keeps getting better and better. There’s a lot of expressions he displays in Hot Shot which he was lacking in the Hospital, so for me his performance in Hot Shot is kinda taking the lead. Though his role in the Hospital is definitely worthy of praise.

    @ peaks,

i think that’s the reason why jerry accepted this role. its a challenging role and he can showcase his talent. far from that of his role in mg. the ending might not be appreciated by many but i think the drama just wanted to show everybody the reality of life. i could have hated it more if dr su ended up with the lady doctor, leaving his wife behind. at least he was able to recover from being that unenthusiastic doctor again to the enthuasiastic one. knowing now his purpose in life.

    @ shaz,

like what i said to peaks, the drama wanted to show the bitter reality of life. with the harshness and pressure of the medical profession, doctors would in some way be like dr. su. a “living dead”. lol. that’s what i call him on the last two episode. although many hate the ending, i appreciated it. especially the dialogue of jerry saying if you happen to meet him on the tower don’t forget to cheer him up. doctors really need those encouragements and smiles you know. and don’t forget what happen to dr. tang. he has gone insane but its nice to know that he was allowed to go stay inside the hospital.

i agree with you regarding dr. khoo. i love the unselfish thing he did on the last part. but it got me thinking that its karma knocking on his door. too bad it befell on his beloved daughter. thats so sad.

re: the fast forwarding stuff. i get eerie feeling when seeing dramas like this. i have watched surgeon bong dal he before and i did the same thing. dramas like this always say that pulmonary embolism cause sudden death during operations and i was diagnosed with that after an operation i had in 2004. thinking about it is unnerving.

    @ peaks and shaz,

i agree with shaz, jerry yan’s acting is getting better. on my point view, hotshot is his redeeming drama. if not for hotshot i would not even consider watching any of his drama. lol. i am sorry but really i was not really a fan before. though jerry’s acting in hospital is good i would still i like his role in hotshot more. that’s because its not that dramatic (though that’s for us to see because its still on an early part) and i am basketball fanatic. lol.

anyway, thanks for the nice discussion thread. i appreciate your comments and your opinion. thanks.

i havent seen the hospital yet i mean not the entire series but iv noticed he really acted in that series not making any effort to show his cuteness at all..another side of jerry but i still prefer his side with a bit rudeness and arrogance just like in hotshot…iv been into him for 8 years alreadyhehe

lol, yeh we had quite a discussion going on didn’t we. That was nice. Anyways, yep kudos to everyones point of view, but I especially agree with your take on Hot Shot being his redeeming role! I’ve never been such a Jerry follower either, usually just watch whatever drama that I’ve taken a liking to. I’m still contemplating whether to watch the Hong Kong movie he starred in, though the reviews weren’t great, it might make an interesting watch, magic Kitchen I think its called. Peace out X

maybe i read too much professional reviews, and how they are all kinda saying how The Hospital is the best TWanese production ever. LOL! so i went watching. But I haven’t finished everything yet. All I can say is that i think Jerry is serious in his craft, and he really want to improve. and this drama certainly provided him w/ dat opportunity. i heard this drama won for BEst Director (and Best Story? they had the most nominations anyway), and the media just kept expecting whether jerry will get nominated 4 Best Actor.

In Hot Shot, I think jerry has mastered acting already. i mean, i think he was into character really and his acting just showed off naturally. i even think it was easy for him.

the story and the ending?? i agree, the drama wanted to show reality, although it can be really painful..i also can’t count the no of times i cried!!

    hi hanj,

i guess each of us have unique taste. while you like him in MG because of his rudeness and arrogance but forgive me for saying this i despised him in MG that until now I cannot seem to watched the whole series. lol. wow. 8 years…you seem to be a true blue jerry yan fan. i am not that devoted. i changed from one actor to another in a span of one drama series. hehe.

thanks for always dropping by and commenting. i do appreciate it. thanks.

    @ shaz & mil3tt3

for others, maybe Hot Shot is his redeeming role, but for critics or for the whole of the entertainment industry, The Hospital is his way up to the pedestal. get what i mean? i think that’s how TW press (& TW public) single out jerry from among TW actors, and how he is being said as an A-lister. (though still an idol. LOL!). anyway, he’s already up there even before The Hospital came. but i think he needed and wanted justification for himself for that position.

and i read, after The Hospital, he really wanted to take a lighter (coz imagine how depressing his role there is) so he agreed to take on HS though he rejected it at first.

@Milette, aah the good old Yamapi drama, how you finding it? I remember I enjoyed it quite a lot, though still found it somewhat weird, it had a good representation of friendship (it’s what I love about Jdramas, they tend to be morally grounded in terms of portraying wider themes and societal issues-not all of course). I remember enjoying it coz of Yamapis role, though I don’t think I could re-watch it! peace out X

LOL! Nobuta?? Kame!!! o BTW, since I am a fan of Kame & Jin, did you know that Jerry gets to meet them??? apparently Johnny was meeting Jerry several times, and he invited jerry to watch Dreamboys. and jerry was sitting beside Jin & Johnny! imagine that! LOL! coz jerry’s popular in Japan, JE wanted to collaborate (i think) w/ him.

anyways, re Magic Kitchen, i think this movie was banking more on its popular stars (Sammi, Jerry, and Andy Lau) It was successful that it was a box office hit, but i think reviews are just ok ok. in the middle. i watched it, i wouldn’t say its bad. it’s just ok. But it gives you an overload of Jerry Yan’s cuteness!

    @ legoland,

yeah, i know what you mean. and i agree with you with your take in wanting justification for his position. truth is, i was one of those who doubt his acting ability since my first impression of him is just a pretty face. lol. since i thought mg is just a fad or something. but because of hot shot (which i was looking forward to watch because of wu chun btw) i was able to see a different jerry. if not for hot shot i wouldn’t even take a look at the hospital. that’s the reason why i also said its his redeeming role. i think it redeem himself on me. lol.

but my views is not all viewers will like the hospital because of heavy drama unlike the light story in hot shot.

Thats an good idea, I might tune into magic kitchen whilst waiting for Hot Shot (well its that or FTLY), subs are taking a while, but maan is it hard work-so hats off to the subbers.

haha. now we have different taste. i love change and hero. esp hero. basically because i also love courtrooms (kuryu kohei’s addiction to home shopping really left me giggling) and politicians making a change on this corrupted world.

yap, i’ve seen both. its because of orange days that i also hunt down every Tsumabuki Satoshi even his how many second stint in Tokyo Drift. lol. But I haven’t seen Water Boys yet.

lol true, Hero was deffo a let down for me, but I’ve heard great things about Change-I’ve kinda put it off for the time being though as some muppet told me the ending.

“its because of orange days that i also hunt down every Tsumabuki Satoshi even his how many second stint in Tokyo Drift. lol. But I haven’t seen Water Boys yet.” Oh my God, we actually have the same view on Satoshi, believe it or not, Slow Dance was my first Jdrama! It was from that I went on to search for other Satoshi dramas. LOl I got soo excited when I saw him for like a couple of secs in Tokyo Drift-with his one word dialogue “Go”. I made a big deal out of it, though I can say no one else from my family were enthusiastic (they already sigh at my drama obsession). Hmm I did try first 2 eps of Water Boys, it wasn’t bad, but I think you have to enjoy that type of humour to enjoy it. its kinda like a mellowed down version of American Pie humour-which I was never into!

Since you’re a kimutaku fan, have you tuned into any smapXsmap vids yet? Its a brilliant celeb host prog. Smap can cook, dance, entertain lol and they’ve interviewed numerous Holywood celebs-who says you have to be Japanese to enjoy Japanese entertaintment! peace out X

SMAPXSMAP, i watched several episodes. again..connect with F4. has anyone seen the interview they had with F4?? omg, that was the funniest!! they had some skit going on, with Kimutaku as a director, and in the end as Doumyoji w/ Jerry. their entrance was so hilarious!! the interview was funny as well, especially the game they had. F4 was enjoying themselves too!! i read after the interview, jerry waited for Kimutaku.

So you can see? i really think JE has something going on with Jerry.
