After talking about bounce rate last week, I have again discovered something that might makes some eyebrows raised. Majority of us bloggers involved ourselves in what we can call viral tagging. Through an innocent onlooker’s eyes you would think its advantageous because you will be gaining a lot of backlinks just by posting. I also thought that way until one day while bloghopping I read this article that says Technorati and Google penalize blogs that engage in viral tagging and link farming. This post of BluePanJeet got me thinking.
So when I was able to get some free time I searched the effects of viral tagging before doing this post. I googled about viral tagging and end up with two blogs that explains their opinion and experience on viral tagging.
- Ian Fernando’s Why I do not Do Viral Tagging - I would like to quotes Ian’s statement about viral tagging. He says This viral tagging is just an act of desperation to get linkbacks and a PR, maybe even some traffic if any. You as an author should not be in the acts of desperation to get traffic, to get a PR, to increase SERP, etc. It takes time and effort. Online marketing should be a working effort a job and in the end you will be rewarded for the hard work.
- Jack’s I Stop the Viral Tagging - in this post Jack’s is telling his experiences on viral tagging. He says and I quote “Once upon a time ago, i have joined to viral tagging. i think it would be good, just by posting one post with hundrends of links to other blogs, my blog will also be linked by those hundrends blogs. but now i have realized that i was wrong. Instead it increase my pagerank, it maked my site has a worst position on google search engine result”
Reading through those two blog post made me realized something. Viral taggings are easy way out. It may help us gain popularity with fellow bloggers who participate in viral tagging but when it comes to being useful to those who end up in our blog using search engine, as Jack stated, our blog might be bookmarked as “don’t visit this site again”. And with our blog having no good content at all will make our bounce rate higher. Not to mention that this would somehow be bad when it comes to your blog search engine placement.
So what’s your stake about VIRAL TAGGING ? It is GOOD or BAD ?

hello milet sorry for the delayed reply. By all means kapatid.
anyhow we can still do memes pero yung may mga link train sa end ng mga memes is a no-no. You can just link the origin of the meme and who tagged you and who are you tagging. Just make sure that you just don’t highlight or link the name. make it as a pingback and link a sentence and not the name. Tutal iniindex naman ng technorati ang pingback kesa sa standard link. Nice post by the way. very informative. And thank you for the surprise visit.

I read about that on another blog a while back, so I deleted the few tagging things that I participated in. The article I read, which I can’t find right now, also talked about all the Technorati and EC type sites don’t *really* do much better than doing a Google search for some good blogs to read and leaving thoughtful comments. I still have my Technorati account, but I stopped trying to see if the next new site could promote me any better.
